Avenida Corrientes (Av. Callao & Av. Corrientes, Buenos Aires) – this is one of the most important thoroughfares in the city of Buenos Aires.  Stretching some 8.6km from Puerto Madero up to Chacarita, Avenida Corrientes got its current name in 1822 in homage to the province of Corrientes, which was the first to support the cause of Argentine independence. It remained a narrow road until the 1930s, when it was widened to become the grand boulevard it remains to this day.  Because of the concentration of theater houses here and oversized commercial billboards, some compare this avenue to New York’s Times Square and nearby Theater District.
